Short version:
This phone prioritizes camera quality and sleek design over less flashy basics like battery life and fingerprint sensor. If you’re fine with that this will be tough to beat at this price.
Long version:
This was my third pixel, and I loved my previous two. However, this one took a big step backward in some of the areas that are important to me.
On the pro side, it’s basically impossible to beat image quality at this price point. The camera is always fun to use. The design is stylish, although I find the ridge along the back kind of annoying when sliding into a pocket.
The negatives… First, I have no idea what they were thinking with the phone unlock process. I know a lot of people just don’t care about this, but I find it obnoxious. The dedicated fingerprint sensor on previous pixels was consistent and made using the device fluid and natural. The in-screen sensor used on the 7a is basically unusable. I have tried everything, from moisturizing my fingers when setting up, to the touch-your-nose trick (desperate times over here), and it just flat-out doesn’t work. When the room is dark, the screen obnoxiously flashes bright white to try and read your fingerprint. So then you set up face unlock as the backup, which sometimes works, but again, inconsistent. In addition, you end up accidentally unlocking your phone when you’re on the move because you graze the screen with your thumb and it happens to see your face, and without realizing it you’ve opened an app and blindly tapped a bunch of stuff. Thankfully I have not yet sent a bizarre group message. The end of the screen unlock story is that the only way to create a consistent experience is to use the sequence of power button -> slide or hold unlock icon -> enter code or pattern. I was fine with that in 2011, but it makes me dislike this phone slightly more every time I do it in 2024.
The other big one is battery life. For some reason they reduced the battery size from previous models. Maybe in service of reducing the device’s size? It’s one of those things I just don’t want to have to think about. Unfortunately I’m usually just barely hanging on by the end of the day, and if I go for a round of golf or anything else that puts a little extra drain on the battery I’m probably not going to make it.
Wish I could still recommend the pixel line, but they’ve taken a step backward here.

I had moved away from Pixel phones after my Pixel 2 XL due to the price. After bouncing around from OnePlus to Motorola I’m back in the fold and VERY happy with the 7a.
The things I was looking for were qi charging (hard to find in midrange phones), NFC payments, good battery life, and long software support. This checked all the boxes. Some of the pleasant surprises were the size (not too big), the clarity of the screen, and the camera. The camera in particular is EXCELLENT.
The fingerprint reader is a bit inconsistent, but I’ve found that if I wet my finger and wipe it off the reader works every time. I’ve got pretty dry fingertips, so that could explain the issues I have with it. I don’t have to store a ton on the phone, so 128gb of space is plenty for me to use the apps that I want and download music and movies for when I’m traveling.
You’re not going to find a better phone for the price. I got mine on sale for $399, which these days is the most I will pay for a phone.

Can’t beat what you get for the price! The only thing that almost made me give it four stars is that the battery life is so-so. But the great price made up for it. Also, I like the phones a bit on the small side for greater portability. It is small but mighty, and the camera good. Very happy with it.

As a phone, it works well – YMMV depending on your carrier. The same applies to data speeds and reliability. My experience with TMo isn’t perfect, but it’s okay most of the time. The 5G tech in the 7a works great. The camera, both for stills and video is quite good, especially in decent light. Lower light scenes require some extra considerations, but you can get decent photos even then. Low-light video is just okay. Video sound is quite good most of the time.
